What is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell's palsy is a peripheral (affecting the peripheral rather than the central nervous system) facial paralysis that results from damage to the seventh cranial nerve, or "facial nerve". Due to paralysis of the facial nerve, symptoms can include inability to lift or close one eye, difficulty moving facial muscles on one side of the face, lacrimation (eye tearing) on the affected side, distortion of taste (especially on the first 2/3 of the tongue) and tingling around the lip area (all on the affected side). The condition has an abrupt onset and is idiopathic in nature (no known cause).

Traditional Chinese Medicine's point of view

Bell's Palsy (Zhong Feng) is considered a Wind Attack or External Wind Stroke attack. The main pattern differentiation being a Wind invasion due to emptiness of the Channels (Maclean and Lyttleton 1998). In Chinese Medicine, Wind is said to be the carrier of 1,000 diseases. Wind is thought to take advantage of the deficiency (weakness) a patient is experiencing and enters the body attacking the sinews and vessels in the area of the face. This results in vital energy (Qi) and the blood to stagnate causing the inability of the facial muscles to

relax and therefore contract (Wolfe 2003). The principle of treatment is to expel Wind and promote the movement of Qi and blood by scattering the stagnation. 

Acupuncture for Bell's Palsy

According to Liu (1995), when acupuncture was initiated within three days post onset in 684 cases of facial nerve paralysis, 100 percent of the patients were cured or there was a marked improvement (5). Other studies (Gao, Chen, 1991) revealed that 80% of cases that were treated at more than 2 months post onset, and 83 percent of severe cases, were cured or had excellent effect (6).

How are you! I am Alexander Ho. I am a Chinese Medicine physician & acupuncturist .Thank for visiting my blog, Let me introduce myself.

I was born on 24 Dec 1979, Blood type is "O", I like reading very much. My hometown is Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I graduated from The One Academy with a Diploma in Multimedia Design. Because I have a great interest in health & well-being field, I worked with Fitness First & True Fitness club for 4 years. At the same time, I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture from  KL Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. For about 6 to 7 years of works and studies life, I finally become a Chinese Medicine physician & acupuncturist.

It wasn't easy for me to manage my career while taking Chinese Medicine course at the same time. Although I always busy, but I feel glad for using my time wisely on learning Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. After graduated, I used to work in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for 1 year. It wasn't easy for me to persuade eldest people to be treated by me, because people in Sabah are more conservative and not easy to trust young physician like me. However, I managed to treat a few infertility patients by acupuncture in Sabah.

It was time for me to left my family again in year end of 2009. I decided to spend another 3 years to take another up grade course in my college. It was a difficult decision to look for a Chinese Medicine job in Kuala Lumpur, not only the paid is much lower than a sale promoter in shopping mall but also not many Chinese Medicine clinics like to hire a young physician like me. At that time, I was upset and I told myself," I never give up even if I have to depend on myself!" I was motivated by my father, he said," It's ok, your life will be meaningful when you really enjoy what you do! The process is much more important than the result!"

The first 2 years, I run a home based SOHO acupuncture office at Subang Jaya. Everyday is a war for me. From unstable income to all kind of problems in managing this small business, the beginning was really difficult, it took me tears and sweats to learn from mistakes. There were difficult time when I ordered too much unnecessary herbs and end up to owe too much money from suppliers, but I still want to thank God for those challenges, because it train me to become better in the future. I am happy to have a few sincere friends and classmates who always help me by giving advices, also patients who keep supporting me.

Now, I have an small acupuncture office in Kelana Jaya. Thank for a few of church brothers and sisters who provided an office for me. We Christians believed God always bless us and Jesus loves to see people helping each others! In order to increase patients' satisfaction, learning the new treatment skills has become my daily routine or you can called it a habit! I had suffered from congenital freckles since young. It wasn't too serious before 20 years old. It become worse if I go under sun for long hours. My skin problems has affected my life, I become very low self-esteem that I do not feel comfortable to talk to people face to face.

Love Carnival July 2011 - Alex

Love Carnival July 2011 is a Charity work that held by ECA Church and some of the Malaysia Government Departments to bless the people in Taman Muda, Cheras. Ho Modesty Consultancy is one of the participate that provide FREE Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and giving FREE Chinese Medicine formulation to the people who live in Taman Muda.


Those who wear purple T-shirt are my brothers & sisters from ECA Church. This day, Pastor Sia (left) all the way from New Zealand  to support our event.



Registration is needed before they came to see Chinese Medicine Physician.

On my right side, there are Western Medicine physician who provide FREE Blood sugar & Blood pressure analysis.

There was a huge crowd outsides our room.

There are too many of them who is waiting to get Chinese Medicine consultation from us.

Me & Ms. Sim Kui Liang, my best friend, who also a Chinese Medicine physician were really busy diagnosing patients who come to us.

Even it's near to lunch time, people still waiting to see us! They sit patiently while reading newspaper and wait for their name to be called.

Alex must be extremely focus on the medical history told by the patients. Alex noticed most women are very health conscious. They love Chinese Medicine treatment because it is very effective and yet natural, no side effect to their bodies. Alex learnt a lot from them. The more I see them, I think of my mother. Just wish to have more time to take care of her.

Sometimes, we as Chinese Medicine physician need to explain more to our patients. To tell them how to manage a stress-free lifestyle and tell them some well-being tips that they can do it at home.

My Lecturer - Professor Chu came back from Osaka, Japan. She bought some lovely Chocolates for me. Professor Chu is a great Chinese Medicine physician, she lead the whole Charity Acupuncture event in Petaling Jaya. I've learnt a lot from her.
